| BUFFALO, N.Y. – The first 320-slice Computed Tomography (CT) scanner in Western New York will arrive at Millard Fillmore Gates Circle Hospital at 8:oo a.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2008. The $2.5 million machine, called Aquilion One, is the most sophisticated CT scanner in the world.
The 4400-pound device is a revolution in Computed Tomography (CT) technology that dramatically shortens the diagnosis of cardiac and stroke patients to a fraction of the usual time. Aquilion One can measure subtle changes in blood flow or minute blockages forming in blood vessels no bigger than the average width of a toothpick in the heart and brain. The new imaging technology means a medical exam can be completed in mere minutes, with less radiation and contrast dose to the patient.
Fewer than 20 hospitals worldwide have Aquilion One systems.
A crane will lift the main part of the scanner that looks like a giant glazed donut into a hole carved out of a third floor wall on the Delaware Avenue side of the hospital. The machine is expected to be operational by the end of May.
